York

Sports

York has plenty of sporting and leisure activities to offer its visitors, including fourteen sports and leisure centres, nine golf courses and numerous health and fitness suites.

Emperors Gym is located in the city centre, on Seldergate, by the canal. The gym offers state of the art gym equipment and facilities, and a busy timetable of athletics and fitness classes. The centre also has its own swimming pool. There is ample private parking, and the centre is open every day. Call 01904 610 208 for more information.

Other sports centres include the Thirsk Squash Club on Newsham Road (01845 524 791) and the Abbey Leisure Centre on Scott Road (01757 213 758).

For go-karting, there are three companies based in York. F1 Racing are based at the Pepsi Max Raceway and are the only company to offer indoor facilities. The venue has a capacity of 200, and is open seven days a week. There is also a licensed bar and lounge with TV, pool table and video games. Parking is free and secure, and the raceway is only three miles from York train station.

The venue is available to hire for private events. Drinks and catering (by Bradshaws of York) is optional. Contact Phil Hannington on 01904 673 555.

Fulford Golf Club is a one hundred year-old golf course, situated out on Heslington Lane. The course has played host to many major amateur and professional tournaments, including the Benson and Hedges International and the Murphys Cup.

The club welcomes golfers of all abilities – as well as women and juniors – but does request that golfers are members of a club that is affiliated to the Golfers Union. Tuition is available, and food is served in the clubhouse. Contact the club on 01904 413 579 for more information.

For mountain biking or hiking, Purple Mountain Biking & Walking Holiday offer guided tours, hire of bikes and rented accommodation for breaks in the north of York. Contact Miss Victoria Griffin on 01751 417 856 or 07966 571 080 for more information.

York is also, of course, home of the York Racecourse. For fans of horseracing, contact Mr James Brennon on 01904 620 911 for details of race meetings.
