Shopping
Shopping in York is a truly rewarding experience, with a variety of retailers and stores in which to find clothes, jewellery, antiques, and more. There craft stores, designer boutiques, alternative goods and chain stores, as well as themed markets and numerous second-hand shops.
The city centre is more-or-less pedestrianised, so drivers will struggle to get around the city; but the ‘Park and Ride’ services have won awards, and with the impressive scenery and ancient streets, making one’s way around on foot is an enjoyable activity in itself.
York’s Snickleways and streets are renowned for their curiosity shops and arts and crafts specialists and, as such, are busy with shoppers every day of the week. Coppergate is home to modern, high street stores like Evans, Thorntons and Starbucks. Swinegate is another modern shopping street; once home to the pig market, and now to designer boutiques and restaurants. Micklegate is the place to visit when shopping for books, paintings or vinyl.
Newgate Market is open seven days a week, with 110 stalls trading in locally grown vegetables and meat. The longest pedestrianised street in Europe, the market street is found between The Shambles and Parliament Street. The market closes at 4pm during the week, and at 4:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.
The Antiques Centre sells antiques and collectables on behalf of a hundred dealers and collectors in York. Located just around the corner from the Minster, the centre also houses an on-site café serving drinks and refreshments.
The Barbican Bookshop on Fossgate has ten rooms of new, second-hand and antique books, including those on specialist subjects and many that are now out-of-print. Further along on Fossgate is Lucius Bookshop and Gallery, a store specialising in rare books, first editions and original works of art.
Respected jewelers include Robert Feather Jewellery on Gillygate, with its selection of contemporary jewellery, and Cavendish Jewellers on Stonegate, a family-business specialising in period jewellery.
Monk’s Cross in the newest shopping centre in York, and home to all the leading brands and retailers, including Miss Selfridge, Dorothy Perkins, TopShop and Next. There is an interactive play feature in the Magical Tree Garden, a newly opened sculpture for children, as well as a selection of cafes, restaurants and bars.
The shopping centre is open seven days a week, and closes at 8pm during the week. With more than a thousand free parking spaces, a reliable and frequent shuttle bus service, and even a cycle path, the centre is incredibly easy to get to.
