York

Pubs and Bars

It is said that York has as many pubs and bars as there are days in the year. Whether this is literally the case or not, there are certainly a lot of them, with drinks and atmospheres to suit most visitors, including a collection of recently-opened cosmopolitan wine bars and chic café-bars in the centre of town.

Ye Old Starre Inn, on Stonegate in the city centre, is a Grade II listed building with a cellar dating back to the tenth century. The bar serves a variety of beers and ales, bottled and on draught, as well as regularly changing guest beers. The ambience is quaint and traditional, and locals are very fond of ghost stories based in the ancient building. This pub is one of several contending for the honour of being the oldest pub in York.

The Lighthorseman is a bar and 4* Bed and Breakfast, located on the Fulford Road, just a few minutes drive out of the city centre. The building is Grade II listed, and owners claim the only remaining Victorian bar in York. Food and bar snacks are served, and real ale is available at the bar. The Blue Bell Inn, on Fossgate in the city centre, is also Grade II listed. This pub has stood here since at least 1790, and the same family has held the license for nearly ninety years, giving the pub ancient and recent history. With its preserved nineteenth-century fixtures and fittings, the pub has received recognition from CAMRA for its “outstanding pub interior”.

Montey’s Rock Café is just a few minutes walk away on Micklegate, but inside it’s a world apart! The rock café is decorated with rock’n’roll posters and memorabilia, and music is heavy and loud. Staff have been commended for their efficiency and friendliness, and the bar is popular among young and old rock fans.

Harkers is located in an elegant, nineteenth-century, ex-bank building in St Helen’s Square. Despite the bar’s appearance, drinks are cheap and there are pool tables. The bar is popular with young and old professionals.

York also has a number of branches of pub franchises, including two Wetherspoon bars and an O’Neill’s.
