York
Nightclubs
Though not renowned for its nightlife, York actually has a relatively large number of nightclubs. Amongst these are franchises, such as Hooters on Market Place and Club XS on Aberdeen Walk, and unique clubs and live music venues.
The Gallery, on Clifford Street, presents pop and party anthems, hip-hop and R’n’B, soul, funk, indie and rock’n’roll. The club has four separate areas to accommodate the diverse range of music, a food stand, and is open seven nights a week. Call 01904 647 947 for more information and current listings.
A short walk across town to Micklegate brings you to Ziggy’s Nightclub. Ziggy’s is a student bar, with cheap drinks and cheerful décor, and a smart-casual dress code. The club is regarded as York’s primary alternative club, with its emphasis on nu-metal, indie and rock music, and there are also 70s and 80s nights. There are a few different rooms and spaces, with several bars serving a variety of drinks. Call 01904 620 602 for current listings.
Just around the corner is Toffs on Toft Green. The venue has two rooms, each with its own music and ambience. There is a large, open dance floor in one space, and a relaxed café-bar area in the other. Upstairs is the biggest VIP lounge in York, open to members only. Wednesday nights are Attitude, a student night playing chart, party and drum’n’bass. Contact the club on 01904 620 203.
Fibbers is part of the new generation of music venues. Combining a café and restaurant, with a bar, nightclub and music shop, the complex has been reviewed in the national press on several occasions. The venue was opened in 1992 on The Stonebow and has since risen to national acclaim. Nominated for the Free House of the Year, and Small Business of the Year, the owners’ efforts have certainly been rewarded.
There is live music every night of the week, and restaurant quality food is served during the day. The shop sells CDs, vinyl, books, posters and music memorabilia. As alcohol is not served, those over the age of fifteen are permitted. The venue is available to hire from £150-200 p/night.
Clubs in nearby Scarborough include Studio 1, Boleyn’s, Privilege and Livewire Discos.
