The Wakefield District has an excellent range of activities and facilities on offer. Wakefield’s Sports Centres have pools, gyms, squash and badminton courts, indoor and outdoor training tracks, solariums and saunas.

The Wakefield Superbowl on Doncaster Road boasts twenty-eight ten-pin bowling lanes, an amusement area, café and licensed bar. Open seven days a week with standard entry prices of only £3-4 and shoe hire costs of £1, the Superbowl is a cheap and cheerful afternoon out. A variety of special offers include ‘buy one ticket get one free’ on Mondays; £3 for the first game, £2 for the second and £1 for the third on Tuesdays; a light show, disco and meal on Wednesdays; and a quiz, fancy dress school disco on Friday. There are five public sporting and leisure centres around Wakefield, including Knottingley Sports Centre and Lightwaves Leisure Centre.

Knottingley Sports Centre is based on Hill Top, and offers a range of athletics and martial arts classes and sporting activities. The centre has a large swimming pool, a comfortable licensed snack bar and is available to hire for private functions. The centre can be contacted on 01977 722 505.

Lightwaves Leisure Centre is on Lower York Street and can be contacted on 01924 302 315. The Centre is the larger of these two, and boasts a huge leisure pool, with a wave machine, slides and more. There are facilities for badminton, squash and five-a-side football. Swimming lessons are available on Wednesdays, and the pool can be hired for parties.

There are two sports and leisure centres located on educational sites in the city, as part of a Council project to encourage sports and athletics for young people. One of these is City High Community Sports Centre on Warmfield View. The centre has four badminton courts, a fitness centre, and facilities for football, cricket, netball and martial arts. The centre is open to the public between 6pm and 10pm during week and 9:30am and 4pm on a Saturday, and can be contacted on 01924 374 647.
 
Athletics Stadiums offering athletics facilities and lessons include the Thornes Athletics Stadium, with a 60 metre indoor running track as well as an eight-lane outdoor one, and the Thornes Park Athletics Stadium, which recently gained the QUEST award for quality within leisure facilities.

There are plenty of golf courses around the city, including a number of privately run clubs. Pontefract Golf Centre is ideal for beginners and is situated off Junction 32 of the M62. Call the club on 01977 723 490. Spring Mill Golf Course offers professional coaching and tournaments for children aged between 8 and 14, and can be contacted on 01924 281 781. Wakefield Golf Course and Whitwood Golf Course both require season tickets.

F1 Indoor Karting has recently opened a branch in Wakefield in the Millenia Park, and are now open seven days a week. Equipment is provided, and for those over the age of 15, £20 will pay for thirty minutes driving. Call 01924 201 808 for more information.
