Wakefield

Shopping

Wakefield city centre is largely pedestrianised and offers a range of retail outlets and market stalls, making shopping in the city very often an enjoyable and rewarding experience. And shoppers also have a choice of two nearby shopping centres, offering leading brands and retailers as well as a range of smaller, independent stores.

The Wakefield District Markets are the busy shopping experience that you might imagine of a city like Wakefield. The first market trading Royal Charter granted in 1204, Wakefield has £60 million plans to redevelop and expand the markets, developing a new market hall and outdoor market.

Currently, the markets have stalls and units selling food, DIY and household products, new and second-hand clothing, and with stalls changing all the time, plenty more besides.

There are eight district markets, with special markets laid on throughout the area, including Farmers’ Markets, the Victorian Market and the Staffordshire Pot Fair. The 2007 Wakefield Victorian Market is planned for 15-18 November in the Cathedral Precinct. Wakefield Market, the largest of the eight district markets, comprises a Market Hall, Fish and Meat Hall and an outdoor market. (The latter closed on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays.)

There is a second-hand market every Tuesday and a Car Boot sale on Sundays in the outdoor market.

The Ridings Shopping Centre is located just past Junctions 40 and 41 off the M1. Open seven days a week, until 5:30pm Monday to Saturday, and closing at 4:30pm on Sundays, the centre is convenient and well equipped with more than ninety stores. There is secure car parking, with a car hand wash and valet service available on the first floor.

The centre contains all the leading retailers, such as Marks and Spencer, Bhs, River Island and Miss Selfridge, as well as a number of smaller stores selling gifts, clothes and more.

There is a multi-kiosk food court, with seating for 300 people and a wide selection of meals and snacks. There are also other restaurants and cafes located around the centre, providing refreshments and snacks. Entertainment for all the family is regularly laid on around the shopping centre.

Carlton Lanes Shopping Centre was opened in nearby Castleford in 1991. There are nearly fifty stores, a multi-kiosk food court, and all the other facilities you would expect, spread over the 100,000sq/ft centre. Open seven days a week and offering secure parking, the Carlton Lanes is a popular choice for shoppers in the region.
