Wakefield

Restaurants

Wakefield is becoming increasingly cosmopolitan, and this modernisation is reflected in the ever-growing choice of restaurants and international cuisine available from the city centre restaurants. Seven Wakefield restaurants are currently listed in the Good Restaurant Guide.

The Cow Shed on Northgate in the city centre is a sixteenth-century, Grade II listed building that inspired Joanne Harris’s successful novel, ‘Chocolat’. The restaurant specialises in grilled food, and serves a choice of contemporary meals and buffets. Prices tend to be quite expensive, but the restaurant has received rave reviews for the quality of its food, its peaceful and cosmopolitan ambience and its welcoming staff. Indoor and outdoor seating is available, and the restaurant has a late license for the weekend.

Catering for private parties of up to sixty people is available. For more information or to book a table, call 01924 291 044.

The Kaye Arms, on Wakefield Road, has been trading as a family-run restaurant for nearly forty years. The restaurant serves top-quality contemporary British food at very reasonable prices, with a choice of sandwiches, snacks and meals, and a range of unusual specials on offer. The wine list includes wines from around the world, and is frequently updated. The restaurant is open six days a week and closed on Monday. To book a table, call 01924 848 385; please note, tables cannot be reserved for a Saturday.

The Harrington’s Restaurant in the Healds Hall Hotel has been praised by both The Good Food Guide and the Guardian Supplement Food Guide as “something to write home about”, and has built up an enviable reputation for its atmosphere and staff. The restaurant is a family-run fine dining experience, with a selection of classic and contemporary dishes to choose from. The wine list has an impressive variety, changes frequently, and prices range from £20 to £50 a bottle. There is also a selection of British cheeses available. The eighteenth-century building has a prestigious air, but staff pride themselves on the relaxed atmosphere and comfort of the restaurant.

The Bistro is open during the day, from 12 until 2pm, and closed on Saturdays. The restaurant is open evenings from 7 until 9pm, seven days a week. Call 01924 409112.

Rinaldi Ristorante Italiano is one of few formal Italian restaurants in the city, offering Italian favourites and a wide selection of specials. Based on Asdale Road, call in or contact 0871 4261849 to make a booking. Other Italian fine dining establishments are Valentinos and Bella Roma.

Spice Cottage on Union Street and Aggrah, beside the university campus, both offer quality Indian food at reasonable rates. Thai Kitchen, in Cross Square, is not cheap but serves authentic Thai cuisine.

Mex Millenium on Market Street is a popular choice for students. The food is authentic Mexican at reasonable prices, and there are special offers for students.
