Nightclubs

With two universities and a large college, Sheffield has a dense student population. As such, the city hosts a large number of nightclubs, pubs and music venues. Large clubs include the internationally renowned Gatecrasher, the Leadmill, Kingdom and Corporation. There are also a number of pubs and bars around the city that showcase local bands, including The Boardwalk and The Grapes in the city centre.

Corporation nightclub – on Milton Street in the city centre – has had rave reviews from most of the national rock magazines, including Kerrang!. Drinks are very cheap, and there are offers most nights. The club has three floors, with two large dance floors and also hosts gigs and live music events.

Corporation is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with DJs delivering Sk8, ska-punk and metal, current and classic indie and drum’n’bass, hardcore, punk and emo sounds.

Home of the internationally renowned Gatecrasher brand, Gatecrasher One is one of the most popular clubs in the north. Its impressive interior includes Phillipe Starke-inspired furniture, fiberglass sculptured seating, walls that change colour, chandeliers and red carpets. The club lighting includes more than fifty moving heads and a full colour laser system. There is also a custom-built sound system, projection screens and live Internet streaming capability.

Gatecrasher is open most nights. Monday is Blessed, its busiest night, with student anthems and drinks from 99p. Wednesday is VodBull – chart, commercial dance, r’n’b, indie and Britpop, with Vodka and Redbull for only £1. Thursday is classic pop at D>SKO. Friday is Bubblegum, with house, hip-hop and r’n’b; and on the first Saturday of the month is the ever popular HedKandi, and Floorfillers or Crasher Rules on other Saturdays.

The £4 million Kingdom nightclub is on Burgess Street in the city centre. The club opened in 2000, and a year later was voted UK Discotheque of the Year by the British Entertainment and Discotheque Association.

Kingdom is a commercial dance venue with four rooms; presenting pop, disco anthems and r’n’b, and hosting gigs and radio performances. A modern, stylish interior includes state of the art lighting and sound, video walls, lasers and Playstations. Room four is a private members bar on the top floor, with its own private lift. Membership is limited and available on an annual basis.

The Leadmill was opened in by a collective in the 80s, and intended as a community space as well as a music venue and nightclub. There are gigs most nights, taking place before the club nights, and concert-goers receive free entry into the club. Previous gigs have included acts from Lily Allen to Desmond Decker, and remain popular with students and music-lovers across the north.

Drinks and tickets are cheap, and offers are plentiful. The club is close to the train station and a short walk from Sheffield Hallam University city campus. The club can be contacted on 0114 221 2828.

The Plug on Milton Street is newly refurbished, and presents live music, rave and techno. Niche, just around the corner, is a popular speed garage and funky house club.

There is a busy gay club scene in Sheffield, with club nights or events on most nights of the week.
