Theatres

Although there are no large-scale theatre or drama production companies based in Rotherham, and very few of the major productions are brought to the town, the Rotherham Arts Centre and Civic Theatre do host plenty of quality, small-scale productions. These include drama, comedy, music and pantomime, as well as youth and amateur theatre.

Rotherham Arts Centre, in the centre of town and within sight of the transport interchange, contains a small theatre that seats up to two hundred people. The theatre very rarely shows large-scale performances, but does very frequently present critically acclaimed, small-scale touring shows.

The theatre is also the home of the Rotherham Youth Theatre and the Out of the Blue Theatre Company.

The Arts Centre is open six days a week, closed Sundays. The centre can be contacted on 01709 823 621.

The Rotherham Civic Theatre, just across the road on Catherine Street, is a desanctified church that has been converted into an intimate, traditional, performance space and has been staging performances since 1960. A variety of professional and amateur productions are presented here every year, from dance to comedy to the obligatory Christmas pantomimes.

For up to the minute listings information, call into the theatre in person or contact the box office on 01709 823 640.

There are a number of dance and theatre schools and amateur dramatics groups in and around the town. Rotherham Youth Theatre stages its performances in the Arts Centre, so information about up-coming performances can be found by contacting the Arts Centre on the number given above.

There is an annual performance by students in the Rotherham College of Arts and Technology, and other productions are occasionally hosted in sports halls and leisure centres around the town. Details of these can usually be found on the Rotherham town council website.
