Rotherham

Pubs and Bars

Like many northern towns, Rotherham has an abundance of pubs and bars. Many of the town centre pubs have closed in recent years, as new housing developments on the outskirts of town encourage breweries to relocate further out. There is, however, still a wide selection to choose from, particularly for those with a taste for real ale.

The Bluecoat is a Wetherspoon pub in the town centre, and was voted the Rotherham Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) Pub of the Year in 2006. Drinks are very cheap, and there are a variety of local, national and international beers to choose from. The pub also has a license to play live music, and a jazz band performs in-house on Mondays.

Other real ale pubs in Rotherham can be around the town centre, including the Hare and Hounds and the Masons Arms, both on Wellgate, and the Effingham Arms on Effingham Street. Rotherham also hosts an annual real ale festival in Oakwood School, featuring samples and tasters of new ales and live music.

Fubar-Snafu on the High Street is a very popular bar, serving beer and a range of cocktails, but also functioning as a live rock music venue. There is an annual Battle of the Bands competition, and there are always full listings for upcoming performances on the bar’s website.

The bar is open seven days a week, but closing times vary between 12:30pm and 1:30am. Food is served every day between 11am and 7pm, and a catering and buffet service is available. To make a booking, contact staff on 01709 836991.

The Sitwell Arms on Pleasley Road has been open since 1822, and is based in a semi-rural village, south east on the town centre. There is a large restaurant and carvery, serving food every day until 9pm, and 4pm on Sundays. The beer garden has comfortable seating and a children’s play area. There is a pub quiz on Thursdays, a dartboard and two televisions that show all the pay-per-view football matches.
