Rotherham

Introduction

Rotherham is the principle town in the South Yorkshire borough of Rotherham, mid-way between Doncaster and Sheffield. The town has a population of just less than a quarter of a million people.

Aside from its five busy markets, selling everything from second-hand clothes to bric a brac and antiques, and plans under way for radical regeneration and development of the town centre, Rotherham borough is 70% rural and as such is loved by walkers, hikers and nature lovers around the north of England.

Historical villages with traditional carveries, real ale pubs and ancient woodlands lie within close reach of the town centre, and a reliable transport system and comfortable interchange make day trips to these areas an option for those with or without children.

With a history documented back to the Saxon period, Rotherham has a number of historical buildings and sites worth visiting, as well as museums and historical exhibitions, such as the nationally renowned Magna Centre. It combines this with a modern, up and coming feel, and provides its fair share of leading retail outlets and chain bars and restaurants.

Rotherham offers a broad selection of sports and leisure activities, including motor racing in Brampton and go-karting in Mexborough. There are also several golf courses and clubs open to non-members, plenty of opportunities for fishing and even a table tennis club! Although it already boasts fifteen leisure and fitness centres, new centres are planned for the town, comprising more and better equipment and facilities.

Well-connected by train and bus and only a short journey from the Doncaster Robin Hood Airport, the journey is getting easier to make. And with one Pub of the Year, three restaurants recommended by the Good Restaurant Guide, an abundance of top quality hotel accommodation and a busy nightlife – including a £3.5 million superclub, visitors to Rotherham need not be disappointed!
