Rotherham

Art Galleries

Rotherham is home to only one permanent art gallery, based in the Arts Centre. There are other temporary exhibitions to be found in the town, as well as art competitions and their displayed winning entries, but the town has a serious shortage of art venues.

Rotherham Art Gallery is the main art gallery in Rotherham, and is one part of a compex of buildings that make up the Rotherham Arts Centre. The other parts of the complex include the libraries, the York and Lancaster Museum, a café and meeting rooms. The Arts Centre is within site of the transport interchange, in the centre of town, and open until 5pm during the week and 3:45pm on Saturdays.

There are three exhibition areas in the gallery, showcasing large exhibitions and smaller collections of works. At least one of these rooms is available for hire to exhibit artist’s own work – hiring is free, but a commission is taken from any sales. Exhibitions change regularly and tend to comprise explorations of contemporary art from around the globe. There has been praise for the gallery’s ceramics, glass and painting collections, as well as Victorian paintings, photographs and Modern Art.

Rotherham College of Art regularly present exhibitions of the students’ work in Rotherham Art Gallery, and past exhibitions have received much praise for the quality of expertise of the art. The Rotherham Society of Artists also occasionally presents exhibitions at the gallery. Details of upcoming exhibitions can be found by calling 01709 823 621.

There are a number of art competitions for artists living in and around South Yorkshire, but the Rotherham Open Art Competition is based in the town. The competition is run by Rotherham Art Gallery, and is open to artists over the age of 17 and living in South Yorkshire. Winning entries will be displayed in the gallery later this year.
