Theatres

Leeds is home to the Grand Theatre, The City Varieties Music Hall and the West Yorkshire Playhouse.

The West Yorkshire Playhouse opened in 1990 in the Quarry Hill area of the city centre. Though a relatively young theatre, it has already won awards for its productions, its staff and even its premises. The theatre is the largest outside London and Stratford with an in-house company regularly presenting its own productions, usually around sixteen a year.

The theatre complex is large, and comprises two performance spaces – The Quarry Theatre and The Courtyard Theatre. The former seats just less than eight hundred people, the latter with a capacity of roughly half that. There is also a bar recommended by CAMRA, a Cyber Café and a restaurant. The function rooms, rehearsal spaces and recordings studio host numerous technical workshops and events; and there is even a costume hire department.

There are around a thousand events and performances held in the theatre annually, including workshops, readings and community events. The venue is also available to hire for holding meetings and conferences. The theatre has a commitment to developing the work of new writers and accepts unsolicited submissions, as well as being one of the venue hosting winning performances in BBC Northern Exposure competitions.

The Leeds Grand Theatre and Opera House has been open since 1878, and was intended as an up-market alternative to the music hall tradition that was popular at this time. The Gothic interior and ornate, sweeping ceiling are regarded as a Victorian design and architectural wonder.

With seating for 1550 people, the theatre now hosts a range a touring theatre company productions, with stand-up comedians and live music as well as drama, comedy and musical theatre. The box office can be contacted on 0870 121 4901.

The City Varieties Music Hall is a small theatre, seating only 531 people. With its largely preserved nineteenth century interior, the building is Grade II listed and one of only a few remaining music halls in the country. The theatre hosts a range of dramatic productions, as well as stand-up comedy and live music performances. Call the box office on 08456 441 881.
