Restaurants

As a busy, cosmopolitan city, there are more than ninety restaurants and cafes in Leeds, serving a vast range of international and traditional British dishes. Alongside the usual fast food chains and franchise coffee bars, there are a wide variety of fine dining restaurants, bistros and Chinese, Thai, Indian, Italian and Mediterranean restaurants.

The Box Tree Restaurant is currently Leeds’ single Michelin-starred restaurant. The restaurant has been located on Church Street for forty years, but only recognized by Michelin after new management took over in 2004. The restaurant serves contemporary variations of traditional French cuisine and boasts an extensive wine list. The restaurant has won numerous awards over the last few years, including 3AA Rosettes in 2005 and 2006 and County Restaurant of the Year from the Good Food Guide.

Fuji Hiro serves Chinese and Japanese food in an informal setting. Customer reviews praise the warm service and value for money, and the Observer claimed the restaurant’s noodles are ‘the best in mainland Europe’. The restaurant is on Wade Lane and can be contacted on 0113 243 9184. Other Chinese, Thai and Japanese restaurants can be found in the area around the Grand Theatre.

Like most Northern cities, Leeds has no shortage of Indian and Balti restaurants. Bollywood Ritz on New Briggate is known for its high quality food at low prices; and Darbar on Kirkgate is said to serve excellent food in a beautifully decorated venue.
