Leeds

Nightclubs

Largely owing to a bustling – and expanding – student population, Leeds is home to almost 150 permanent clubs, as well as numerous live music venues and temporary club nights. The city was once known for its underground house scene, and was regarded as the clubbing capital of Britain; venues around the city have hosted acts such as The Who (in 1970) and more recently Robbie Williams, U2 and Michael Jackson.

As well as rock and alternative clubs, a vast range of dance and hardcore clubs, and intimate live music venues, Leeds is also home to ‘superclubs’ like Heaven and Hell and Gatecrasher.

My House, formerly known as Stinky’s Peephouse, is on Brick Street on the outskirts of the city centre. Recently refurbished, the venue now comprises three floors with a glass dancefloor and a chillout garden area. The new Funktion 1 sound-system plays house music Friday and Saturday nights, with a quieter space upstairs. The décor is dark and minimal. Club nights at My House include BacktoBasics, RudeNot2, Mad Hatters, Blowout and We Love...

The Space is open six nights a week, and presents funky, hard house, drum’n’bass, garage and hip-hop. There are three bars, two rooms and unisex toilets.

Leeds has a growing ‘gay nightlife’, with bars such as The New Penny on Call Lane attracting a diverse clientele.

Club Mission is on Heatons Court, and hosts Homo Night every Thursday. The night offers cheesy dance and Euro mixes in one room and pop and indie in the other, with a two-level weatherproof terrace that will be a smoking area after July 2007. Recently renovated, the club now holds 1500 people, has walls adorned with plasma screens and multi-coloured lasers and there are state of the art sound-systems, air conditioning, smoke machines and a water feature. The Mission Club Lounge contains leather sofas, a fireplace and table service. Entry is £3. Other nights at Club Mission include Poptastic, Glasshouse and Missionary Student Night.

The Brudenell Social Club is a gig and arts venue and members club on Queens Road. The club has hosted secret gigs for acts such as Franz Ferdinand and the Kaiser Chiefs, but also has a commitment to showcasing local bands and puts on gigs most nights in its large concert room. Membership is only £2.50 a year, and members are entitled to use the members’ bar, the games room and other facilities. Prices are very good, but the pub has no late license.

The Cockpit on Swinegate in the city centre also host live music events and showcase bands. Previous acts have included Coldplay, Korn, White Stripes and Boy George. The venue’s club nights include Brighton Beach on Fridays; rock, metal and indie at The Garage on Saturdays.

Leeds University’s The Refectory has a capacity of more than 2000 and hosts live music events and club nights. Previous performances have included those by Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and The Streets. Stylus and Pulse is the student union bar. With a capacity of 1200, the venue hosts live acts and club nights, including The Wendy House and Legends of the Dark Black/Valve Soundsystem and Fruity. By day, Mine is a café; by night it hosts The Tunnel Club (Tuesdays) and live jazz (Mondays).
