Art Galleries

There are a number of art galleries in and around Leeds, including the city gallery, a privately owned and run gallery and a permanent collection in the city university’s art department.

Leeds Art Gallery is on The Headrow in the city centre, and home to some outstanding works of art. Permanent collections include prints, watercolours, Pre-Raphaelite paintings and modern sculpture, from the nineteenth century to the present day. The Times praised the gallery with displaying “probably the best collection of twentieth-century art outside London”. Current works on display include those by LS Lowry, Henry Moore and Damien Hirst, and previous exhibitions have included works by Da Vinci.

The gallery has a Craft Shop and Design Gallery, selling prestigious contemporary craft works, and a lecture theatre available for hire.

The gallery will be closed until May 2007 for renovation; plans include opening up a disused Victorian reading room, building a new exhibition gallery, café and shop and putting in a lift to provide disabled access to upper floors. The gallery will be open seven days a week and closed on Bank Holidays. Admission is free. Call 0113 247 8248 for exhibitions and opening times.

Artco is a privately run gallery on Meanwood Close, just five minutes drive from the city centre, which exhibits and sells contemporary paintings and other works of art by local and renowned artists. The gallery has been open for twenty-five years, and has received positive reviews in national newspapers, including The Guardian. There are two exhibition spaces, and displays are changed every six weeks.

The gallery offers various schemes to aid the purchasing of original art, including an interest-free loan of up to £2000, the opportunity to take the painting home for two days before making a final decision about purchasing it, and customers can even take a photo of their home into the shop and see a digital rendering of the artwork displayed there before making a purchase. Artco also provide a framing service.

The gallery is open six days a week and can be contacted by calling 0113 2620056.

The Leeds University Gallery has an impressive permanent collection of art, housing European and British paintings, drawings and prints from the seventeenth-century up to the present day. Contemporary works include sculpture, ceramics and photographs.

The gallery is open Monday to Friday, from 10am until 5pm, and admission is free. Call 0113 343 2777 for more information.
