Huddersfield

Theatres

Huddersfield boasts a large theatre in its city centre and several small, independent or specialist theatres on its outskirts and in surrounding areas. There are community-based theatres and amateur dramatics groups, as well as large-scale touring shows and nationally renowned productions.

The Lawrence Batley Theatre is located in the city centre, a short walk from Huddersfield’s Kingsgate Shopping Centre. The theatre was opened less than fifteen years ago, and provides a regular programme of drama, comedy, dance, music and exhibitions on its two stages. The theatre also comprises a bar and restaurant and exhibition space.

The building is early nineteenth-century, sharing a builder with the city train station and thought to once have been the largest Methodist Church in the country. A huge, dramatic building, the theatre was saved from demolition in the late ‘80s by the Kirklees Theatre Trust, who earmarked the building for development into a new theatre. The theatre takes its name from that of a local businessman who invested a large amount of money in the project.

CragRats Theatre is located out of the city, in Holmfirth. A small venue seating only 80 people, performances at CragRats are intimate and informal. Productions include drama, dance, comedy and music, with a mixture of small-scale touring shows and the works of the theatre’s own theatre company. CragRats also has a successful youth theatre.

Mikron Theatre Company is a small, touring group based in Huddersfield. The group tours at least twice a year, presenting drama with strong musical elements and exploring large-scale topics, such as history. New productions and tours for 2007 have already been announced, and include a drama concerned with the inventor of the lace-making machine, and performances as part of the Waterways Tour.

Proper Job Theatre Company is based in the Byram Arcade, and use drama as a tool to explore youth and adult disaffection and emotional wellbeing. There are various productions throughout the year, many of them in schools or on educational sites. For more information and current listings, email mail@properjob.org.uk.
