Sports
There are fourteen leisure centres, sports hall and swimming pools throughout the Kirklees area, with a variety of other sporting and outdoor activities on offer. The Students Union organises a number of sports clubs in the city, including martial arts, motorsports and athletics, but these are not all open to the public.
Huddersfield Sports Centre, on Southgate in the city centre, is built over four levels and comprises state of the art health and fitness equipment, as well as offering a packed timetable of athletics and fitness classes and groups. The centre houses an Ofsted-registered crèche, and offers free childcare and free use of the pool to first time centre-users.
The centre has two pools, separate health and fitness suites, a climbing room, sports hall, bowling hall, a gym for 13-16 year-olds, and more. There is also a café, licensed bar and function rooms. Call 01484 223630 for opening times and prices.
Positioned ideally on the Pennines, Huddersfield is also home to more than fifteen golf courses and clubs. Castlefields Golf Club was opened in 1903, is set over 2406 yards of parkland and has a par of 54. Huddersfield Golf Club is an 18-hole championship golf course with a Grade II listed eighteenth-century clubhouse.
The rolling countryside and unspoilt green land around Huddersfield, and the Pennines in which the city is nestled, make for a perfect walking or horse-riding break. There are a range of ‘circular routes’ or hiking paths, including the popular Emley Mast Circular and the North Kirklees Riding Route, as well as enjoyable walks to be had around the local reservoirs at Holme Moss and Holmbridge.
There are opportunities for short- and long-distance horse riding, with a variety of bridle paths, some of which link to national trails. Other activities include boating and sailing on the region’s network of canals, fishing, hang gliding, snorkelling and bird watching by the reservoirs. The Huddersfield Birdwatchers Club can be contacted on 01484 646 990, and the Huddersfield and Halifax Members Group RSPB on 01484 301 920.
Caving and potholing groups operate in the area. Although experience is required for the former, the White Rose Potholing Group runs trips every Sunday, and can be contacted on 01484 680218.
For indoor climbing, the Huddersfield Sports Centre has a dedicated climbing room that can be booked by calling 01484 223630. For the more adventurous climbers, the Huddersfield Climbing Club can be contacted on 01484 654030.
