Art Galleries
There are always plenty of art exhibitions and displays to enjoy in Huddersfield. Studio space and temporary galleries are plentiful; and with large outdoor sculptures in the city centre streets, and exciting architecture all around the city, art is not limited to the city’s one large art gallery.
In Huddersfield city centre is the Huddersfield Art Gallery. Outside of the centre are three more galleries: The Lupton Square Gallery in Holme Valley, the Bruton Gallery in Holmfirth and the Ashley Jackson Galleries in Holmfirth.
Huddersfield Art Gallery is located on Princess Alexandra Walk in the centre, and showcases a variety of art, including decorative and applied art and fine art, as well as hosting music concerts and festivals. The gallery has a permanent collection of two thousand twentieth-century works, including paintings, prints and sculpture.
The gallery also comprises an Art Lounge with catalogues of art for your perusal and an Art Vending Machine, where art can be purchased for £2. The gallery has a commitment to encouraging local artists, and wishes to include works by local artists in the vending machine.
The gallery is closed on Sundays, and open between 10am and 5pm during the week, closing an hour earlier on Saturdays. Call 01484 221 962 for more information.
There are a number of art studios and working galleries around the city. These galleries and studios often host collections and temporary exhibitions that are open to the public. For your own convenience, you are advised to contact the gallery prior to your visit.
Park View Studios displays the work of local artist, Tony Chisholm, over two floors of the old stable block behind Park View Drive South. To arrange a visit, contact the artist on 01484 432 698. Stansfields Gallery has dedicated exhibition areas in the gardens and workshops of the premises on Westgate in the city centre. The rest of the property is used as studio space. Call 01484 531 967 to arrange a visit.
The Art Space on Queen Street South in the city centre is located in the third and fourth floors of the Bates Mill, and comprises large open rooms for hire by artists and sculptors. Call 01484 423 703 to enquire. Other studios available for hire in the city centre include Radiant Works, a property with six units and hosting a programme of workshops for artists and designers.
