Sports
Halifax does not have all the sporting and leisure facilities found in the surrounding cities, but there is still plenty for people to do in the town. With more than ten golf courses on offer, the town is still a suitable destination for a golfing break; and the eight leisure centres are sure to have something to offer those with children, or just individuals who enjoy swimming, athletics, martial arts, and more. The town also has plans to develop a cycling network across the area, for both practical and enjoyment purposes.
The North Bridge Leisure Centre is ideally situated on the outskirts of the town centre, and is open seven days a week. The centre offers a broad selection of sporting and leisure activities, including badminton, football, netball, hockey and volleyball in its large Sports Hall; also bowls, cricket and roller-skating in the Projectile Gallery; and a gym, an aerobics programme and martial arts tuition. There is also a café, licensed bar and function facilities on-site, and an Ofsted registered crèche. For more information, including opening times, call 01422 320 345.
Halifax Swimming Pool is based on Skircoat Road, and is home to a twenty-five-metre swimming pool, fitness studio, dance studio, two squash courts and a multi-media multi-sensory room. The Centre is open six days a week and can be contacted on 01422 366 624.
Skiing is becoming an increasingly popular pastime, and consequently there are a number of indoor/artificial ski-slopes and snowboarding centres opening up around the country. The Halifax Ski and Snowboarding Centre is one example.
The centre can be found inside the Sportsman Inn and Leisure Complex on Bradford Old Road, almost two miles from the town centre. The centre offers a beginner slope, and tuition from one of the award-winning ski instructors at a price of only £12 for adults and £9 for juniors when booking in groups. Rates are reduced when booking more than an hour of tuition, and a special offer applies if booking six hours. Individual skiing tuition is charged at £37 for a non-member adult, and £30 for a junior non-member. For snowboarding, only individual tuition is available and prices are the same as for skiing. For more information, or to book tuition, call the centre on 01422 340760.
For those seeking a challenging game of golf, the Halifax Golf Club course offers a notoriously difficult one. Set into the moorland of Ogden, the 6069-yard, eighteen-hole course is littered with streams and ditches, making it a challenge for even the most experienced of players. Contact the club on 01422 240 047.
The Halifax Bradley Hall Golf Club is slightly smaller, at 5286-yards, but is also an 18-hole course. The club was founded in 1907, and the clubhouse is a sixteenth-century listed building. There is a licensed bar and diner on the premises. The course is located south of the town centre, on Holywell Green. Call 01422 374 108 for more information.
