Restaurants

Halifax is home to eight restaurants recommended by The Good Restaurant Guide and one Michelin-starred establishment, alongside all the Indian and Chinese takeaways, fast food outlets and tearooms that one might expect from a Northern town! Three of the town’s most highly rated restaurants can be found in the village of Sowerby Bridge, only a few miles from the town centre.

The Millbank, on Sowerby Road, has not only been honoured with a recommendation by Good Food Guide, but also with a Michelin star, places in The Independent’s top 10 and The Times’ top 50 restaurants, and numerous other accolades. The restaurant serves contemporary European dishes with a ‘Yorkshire touch’ and offers an extensive wine list and real ale selection in a modern-styled rural pub atmosphere. Meals can be eaten in the restaurant, bar, conservatory or garden areas. To make a reservation, call 01422 825 588.

Close by is The Bore, another up-market pub-restaurant, this one housed in an eighteenth-century coaching inn. The renowned chef serves a selection of classic British dishes with a contemporary twist, made from locally grown produce and complemented by a wine list featuring one hundred-and-fifty different varieties. The restaurant also brews its own Old Bore bitter on the premises.

Recently awarded ‘Yorkshire Dining Pub of the Year’ by the Yorkshire Post, the restaurant’s interior is another reason to visit. The antique furniture, oak beams and flagged flaws provide an elegant combination of the contemporary and the traditional; and the outside seating area offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. The restaurant is open six days a week, closed on Mondays, and serving food until 9:30pm Tuesday to Friday, 10pm on Saturdays, and 8pm on Sundays.

El Gato Negro Tapas Bar is a Spanish restaurant, also in Sowerby Bridge. The chef offers an impressive selection of traditional and contemporary tapas dishes, including plenty of vegetarian options. The restaurant also boasted a carefully thought-out, extensive wine list. Call to reserve a table on 01422 823 070.

Amongst the town’s Chinese restaurants that have rated highly with diners are The Golden Dragon and Lee Garden, both in Elland.

Meena’s restaurant, in Carlton Place, is extremely popular with locals for the high quality of its Balti, Tandoori and Bengali dishes and its low prices. The décor is simple and traditional, and staff are routinely praised as warm and welcoming. The restaurant is open late over the weekends, and is consequently very popular with post-party clubbers and students. Call 01422 350 025 to make a reservation or order takeaway.
