Theatres

Bradford is home to a thriving theatre culture, showcasing the best in new writing, amateur productions and small-scale touring shows. The city has only one major, large-scale theatre, unlike nearby Leeds and Manchester, but this and the other, intimate venues in Bradford present a variety of high-class drama, comedy, musicals and pantomime.

The Alhambra Theatre is a breathtaking Victorian building, once used to showcase the popular music hall productions. The theatre hosts the best in large-scale touring theatre, including West End productions and performances by the Royal Shakespeare Company and Royal National Theatre. The Alhambra Studio is adjacent to the main theatre. This venue tends to stage small-scale theatre and cabaret performances.

On Bridge Street in the city centre is St George’s Hall, a premier venue for concerts, musicals, variety performances and children’s theatre. The venue is also home to Halle, the resident orchestra, who perform a variety of music, from classical to pop to bhangra. Call 01274 432 375 for more information.

The Bradford Theatre-in-the-Mill has a commitment to new writing, and is one of the venues showcasing winning entries in the BBC Northern Exposure awards. The theatre has been based on Shearbridge Road, adjacent to the university campus, for the past thirty years, offering theatre and drama workshops on the premises. Recent refurbishments have seen a lift and large toilet facilities installed for full disabled-access to the venue.

On every other Monday evening, technical workshops are hosted for those interested in the study of – or a career in – the technical aspects of theatre production, and workshops are led by members of the theatre staff. The Tamsin Little Music Centre is another theatre connected to the university. As the name suggests, the theatre specialises in musical productions and concerts. For more information, call the number listed above for the Theatre-in-the-Mill.

The Little Priestley is based on Chapel Street in the city centre, and specialises largely in musical theatre. The main auditorium comprises a proscenium-arch stage, with a seating capacity of nearly three hundred people. The small studio theatre seats seventy. Bingley Little Theatre is located on Main Street in Bingley, inside the Arts Centre, and has been open since 1947. The theatre has seating for almost four hundred people.
