Pubs and Bars
Bradford city centre is home to a variety of pubs and bars, including franchises like Wetherspoon and O’Neill’s. There are also a selection of traditional, real ale pubs, lively gay bars and rock-themed venues.
Bradford CAMRA recommends a number of pubs in the city, and awarded The Junction the title of ‘Pub of the Year’ in 2006. Located on Baildon Road, the pub serves an impressive range of real ales and ciders, some of which are locally brewed. Other contenders for the honour were Haigy’s, on Lumb Lane, and Fighting Cock, Preston Street.
Symposium, in Idle Village, offers an unusually broad selection of drinks; including real ales, continental beers and fine wines. The bar also comprises a restaurant, listed by The Good Food Guide.
Also in Idle Village is Brewery Tap, a rock/alternative pub that claims to be Bradford’s longest serving live music venue. With standard pub décor, pool room and beer garden, the pub maintains a traditional feel whilst offering a fully-stocked rock jukebox and presenting live rock bands two or three times a week. Games of pool are free on Tuesdays, the jukebox is always free and all the drinks are low priced.
For those looking for a more contemporary drinking establishment, Fubar is a cocktail/wine bar situated underneath the Bossa Nova tapas restaurant on Saltaire Road in Shipley. The bar boasts an extensive menu of classic and contemporary cocktails, fine wines, liqueurs, beers and hot drinks, in a relaxed, welcoming environment. And, surprisingly, prices are more reasonable than the chic interior might suggest!
The Sun Hotel is a popular gay bar that claims to be the longest serving of its kind in Bradford. Located on Sunbridge Road, the bar has a large open-plan seating and lounge area, with a pool and games room at the back of the venue and a secluded beer garden. Rooms are available to rent on the upper floors. Drinks are very cheap, and regular entertainment includes chart DJs, drag acts and pub quizzes. Owners pride themselves on warm and welcoming staff and a mixed clientele. The bar is open until midnight on Friday and Saturday nights.
