Bradford

Art Galleries

There are a variety of galleries and art exhibition spaces in Bradford and the surrounding areas, with works of art from local and international artists, exploring a wide range of themes and artistic traditions.

Bradford’s civic art collection is housed in Cartwright Hall. The collections are distributed amongst the venue’s four separate galleries, and date mostly from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Much of the collections are British works, but there is an impressive selection of South Asian arts and crafts, as well as other prints from around the world. Special events and exhibitions are hosted frequently, including educational programmes during the school holidays. Cartwright Hall is located in Lister Park, alongside a boating lake, café and adventure playground.

Admission is free; and the gallery is closed on Mondays, and open between 10am and 5pm the rest of the week. Call 01274 431 212 for more information.

Salts Mill, in the World Heritage Site of Saltaire, is a shopping and cultural development located in what was once an important industrial mill. The suburb of Saltaire is culturally and historically important, as it was designed and built in the nineteenth-century as a ‘model’ village to house workers from the neighbouring factories and mills.

The complex is now home to a variety of shops, small businesses, a café and diner, and four art galleries. The galleries are open-plan in layout and original works of art can be purchased. One of the four galleries is devoted to the noted local artist, David Hockney, and displays an impressive collection of his works, including many inspired by the local area. Another of the galleries specialises in exhibits exploring the heritage of the area; and another comprises displays of operatic costume and masks. To contact the Mill, call 01274 531 163.

There are more galleries and exhibition venues to be found in the areas further out into the borough, set into picturesque valleys or historical villages.

The Manor House is located in Wharfe Valley, in nearby Ilkley, and the first floor hosts a variety of regularly changing art exhibitions. Future events will include an exhibition of works by local artist Jake Attree, as well as ‘Arts Club’, a chance to purchase original works of art. Admission is free and the gallery closes only on Mondays. Call 01943 600 066 for more information.

The Arts Centre on Main Street in Bingley comprises a theatre, lounge and licensed bar and 688sq/ft of art exhibition space. Exhibitions vary, and more information can be had by contacting the centre on 01274 431 576.
