Theatres

Birmingham is home to an impressive twelve theatres, including one with a higher regular attendance than that of any other theatre in the country! There are also numerous small venues, showcasing small-scale touring performances, and amateur dramatics groups.

Birmingham Hippodrome is based on Hurst Street in the city centre, and with annual audiences of half a million, boasts the highest regular attendance of any UK theatre. Performances at the theatre include the best of large-scale drama, and a variety of comedy, dance and drama shows. The theatre also contains a restaurant and coffee bar. The Alexandra Theatre, on Station Street in the city centre, was built in 1901 and opened a year later with a fashionable melodrama titled ‘The Fatal Wedding’. The theatre now showcases performances of comedy, dance, opera and children’s theatre, and has earned a reputation for presenting high quality musicals and concerts. Also on Station Street is the Old Rep Theatre, a 378-seat venue, showcasing small-scale and amateur productions in the Victorian building. The box office can be contacted on 0121 605 5116.

The Crescent Theatre is home to The Crescent, one of Birmingham’s oldest theatre companies. The theatre has seating for up to 360 people in its main auditorium, flexible seating in its Studio auditorium, and stages about sixteen productions each year. Birmingham Library Theatre is located in Paradise Place, close to the city library. The venue seats two hundred people, and hosts dramatic and musical performances which promote the special collections available in the library. For more information, call 0121 236 5622.

Midlands Art Centre attracts half a million visitors every year, and showcases theatre performances, music, children’s plays, literature events, films and exhibitions in its performance spaces. The premises also contain a café, shop and licensed bar.

Other theatres in the city include the Hall Green Little Theatre on Pemberley Road, an amateur dramatic society, Maverick Theatre on Brook Lane, and Birmingham Repertory Theatre on Broad Street.
