With more than fifty health clubs and fitness centres, forty leisure centres, half a dozen golf courses and a seventy-acre outdoor-activities centre, Birmingham has an abundance of sporting and leisure activities to offer its visitors.
There are more than a dozen swimming pools in Birmingham. Those close to the city centre include Small Heath Leisure Centre, on Small Heath, with a twenty-five-metre swimming pool, athletics facilities and a gym; and Sparkhill Pool and Fitness Centre, on Sparkhill, that boasts a thirty metre pool, gym and sunbeds.
Wyndley Leisure Centre is the largest of the leisure centres in Birmingham. As well as being available to hire for children’s parties, the centre hosts a range of sporting and fitness activities and equipment. There is a thirty-three-metre swimming pool, a teaching pool and a range of diving boards. There is a four-hundred-metre athletics track, all-weather pitch, six squash courts and five badminton courts. Also available is a gym, fitness studio and sunbeds.
The centre, including a licensed bar, is open seven days a week, closing at 11pm on Monday to Friday. Unfortunately, the centre will be closed for refurbishment until June 2007. After this date, call 0121 464 7742 for information.
Birmingham Golf Link Circuit is the organisation responsible for the management and upkeep of seven of Birmingham’s golf courses. Membership of the organisation is free, all are welcome, and members are entitled to low green fees and access to any of the seven courses. All equipment can be hired from the respective clubhouses.
The largest of the seven courses is in Harborne Church Farm, on Vicarage Road in Harborne. Located three miles from the city centre, the course comprises nine holes and is notoriously difficult. There is a golf shop, clubhouse and café, with parking for fifty cars. Contact the club on 0121 427 1204.
Outside of the centre, in Sutton Coldfield, is Boldmere Golf Course; an eighteen-hole course on the bank of a lake, the course suits a more relaxed and less competitive game. The club has parking for seventy, and can be contacted on 0121 354 3379.
The Ackers, on Golden Hillock Road, is an outdoor-activities centre set into seventy acres of semi-rural land. Activities available include snowboarding, climbing, canoeing and archery; and all facilities are on-site. The centre also runs management and HR development courses, and First Aid courses for individuals or groups. A variety of special events are available from the centre, including the very popular abseiling (which is often done to raise money for charity) and the ‘challenge run’, which consists of completing mental and physical tasks during a set-distance run. For more information on opening times or prices, contact the centre on 0121 772 5111.
