Birmingham

Shopping

As England’s second largest city, it is no surprise that Birmingham boasts over a thousand retail outlets, numerous shopping centres and malls, and the largest city shopping centre development in Europe. Shoppers have four major department stores, all the high street names and designer brands, and traditional markets to choose from, giving credit to Birmingham’s reputation as the shopping capital of the country!

The Bullring is Europe’s largest city shopping centre development, and home to more than a hundred-and-fifty shops and twenty-five restaurants over its three levels. Combing a modern architectural design with the city’s traditional streets, an award-winning Selfridges building stands at the centre of the development beside the medieval St Martin’s Church. The arcade’s three levels have been themed for the ease of shoppers finding their way around; the lower level comprising a food court and high street fashion stores, the first floor home to young fashion and lifestyle retailers, and the upper floor comprising the high fashion stores.

The Bullring shopping development is also home to a variety of retail and wholesale markets. The wholesale markets cover an area of twenty-one acres and comprise 235 stalls and units.

The Open Market contains 130 stalls, closes only on Sundays and Mondays, and is open from 9am to 5pm the rest of the week. Units sell goods from fresh fruit and vegetables, to bargain electrical equipment, jewellery and mobile phones.

The Rag Market comprises 350 stalls and 17 shops, trading in a range of fabrics and materials. The Indoor Market comprises 140 stalls, including a renowned Fish Section. The Antiques and Collectors Market is made up of 650 stalls, and open between 7:30am and 1:30pm. There is also a Car Boot Sale every Sunday.

A Farmers’ Market is also held in the city every first and third Wednesday of the month, open between 10am and 4pm.

Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter has been a thriving shopping area since the eighteenth-century, and continues to offer an impressive variety of goldsmiths, jewellery makers and jewellers. There are also a selection of restaurants and takeaways in the area.

Star City is an entertainment and shopping complex, located ten minutes outside Birmingham city centre. As well as a vast array of shops and retailers, the centre is also home to a 37-screen cinema showing all the latest releases, including Bollywood films, the UK’s largest casino and a branch of Megabowl. Seasonal shows have included the French ‘Cirque du Soleil’ and the Chinese State Circus. There are three-thousand free parking spaces, and the centre is open every day.

The Fort Shopping Park comprises more than thirty-five units, housing high street chains and restaurants. There are two thousand free parking spaces, and free services for motorists, including tyre changing and restarting of car batteries.

Other shopping centres include Pallasades on Stephenson Street, Martineau Place on Corporation Street, and Pavilions on the High Street.
