Theatres
The Barnsley Lamproom Theatre, on Westgate, is the only theatre in Barnsley, but it is home to three theatre companies: the Lamproom Theatre Company, the Lamproom Musical Theatre Company, and the youth theatre. (The latter actually in two parts – the under-11s, The Lamplyters, and the over-11s, LYTEs.)
The Lamproom stages an impressive variety of large-scale productions and youth and amateur plays, including drama, comedy, musicals and one man shows. And there is also, of course, an annual Christmas pantomime that is always popular with locals.
The theatre is based in what was once a Methodist Chapel, and is being rapidly redeveloped as its popularity grows. There is a bar in the theatre, open forty-five minutes before each performance and for a while afterwards. On non-performance days, it is available to hire for private functions. Car parking is free after 6pm.
To book tickets or for more information about hiring the theatre bar, call the box office between 10am and 2:30pm on 01226 200075.
Despite only having one permanent theatre, Barnsley does claim a few independent theatre companies based in the area. Mark Mark Productions, for example, is a small touring theatre group, which travels the UK and Europe, presenting slap-stick comedy plays with elements of magic, escapology and even fire-eating! The group organises workshops, take residencies and perform regularly at festivals and on Theatre in Education tours. (For more information, contact 01226 211 900.)
Other theatre companies in Barnsley include The Faceless Co, on Haigh Lane, and The Theatre on Wellington Street.
The Academy Theatre in Birdwell is both a theatre school for children and a performance venue. Refurbished and reopened in 2004, the venue seats 180 people and stages productions by students of the Academy. The theatre boasts state of the art lighting and sound equipment, and an attractive and modern interior. The bar is open before and after performances, and is available to hire for private functions and meetings. Parking is free.
