Sports
Barnsley Premier Leisure was set up to encourage sport and athletics in the borough, and coordinate facilities such as leisure centres, stadiums, swimming pools and golf clubs. As a result of this project, Barnsley now boasts a wealth of sporting and leisure facilities, including state of the art gyms and fitness centres, offering lessons in sporting activities from diving to trampolining to martial arts.
The Barnsley Metrodome is a huge leisure complex on Queens Road, with facilities for swimming, squash, bowls, and also a dance studio, gym and health suite. There are four pools in the centre – a competition pool, a diving pool, a toddler’s pool and a wave pool – as well as an unparalleled selection of water rides and experiences in The Waterpark. There are also snorkelling, swimming and diving lessons available for adults and children. Contact 01226 730 060 for more information about booking lessons or hiring the pool for a private event.
The Metrodome has a four rink indoor bowls hall, a large sports hall and dance studio, squash courts, a fully-equipped gym and a sauna and steam room. Food and drink is available in the poolside café, Space Bytes, or from The Rigby Suite restaurant. Full details about opening times, prices and activities can be found by calling the number given above.
Athersley Leisure Centre, on Newstead Road, offers football coaching on astro-turf pitches, as well as badminton, squash, basketball, hockey and gymnastics facilities. There is also a small gym, sunbeds for hire and a bar. Other Barnsley leisure centres include the Hoyland Leisure Centre, the Royston Leisure Centre and the Penistone Leisure Centre.
Home to the Barnsley Athletics Club and the Barnsley Ladies football team, the Dorothy Hyman Stadium boasts a 400m running track, 600-seater grandstand and a gym. Various fitness and athletics classes are conducted at the stadium, and the Fayre and Square restaurant serves food and drinks throughout the day. The stadium is located on Syndale Road, and can be contacted on 01226 710736.
Wombwell Hillies golf course is just one of many golf clubs in the area. The course is small (just nine holes) but official handicaps can still be set. Membership is not required, and all are welcome to visit and learn, practise, improve a handicap or take part in one of the weekly competitions. The clubhouse is well equipped with a large lounge area, licensed bar, a snack bar and a pool table, and can be hired for private events.
For karate lessons, there is the Monk Bretton Karate Club in the Silverdale Community Centre which can be contacted on 01226 740 809. And for the Professional Kickboxing Association on Pontefract Road, call 01226 212339.
