Barnsley

Shopping

For a small town, Barnsley has a lot of choice when it comes to shopping. The town centre has all the leading retailers, as well as bustling indoor and outdoor markets and several boutiques and alternative stores, with the Mall Alhambra close by.

The Alhambra shopping centre houses approximately thirty stores, including all the major chains such as Next, TK Maxx and Primark, and Massarella’s restaurant serves food and drinks all day. The centre is open from 9am until 5:30pm, Monday to Saturday, and 10am until 4pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays. There are over 500 secure parking spaces, all close to the main entrance on Lambia Road, and parking rates are reasonable.

The main shopping streets in Barnsley town centre are Queen Street, Cheapside, May Day Green and the Arcade (the latter the place to find many of the independent retailers and designer boutiques). A new shopping complex and extensions to the markets are planned, so parts of the town centre have already been marked for demolition. Amongst those that are to remain are a number of listed, historical buildings that will be refurbished and made use of.

Barnsley is well known for its 750-year-old markets. First granted a Charter to trade in 1249, Barnsley markets have flourished and today comprise 300 hundred stalls, selling food, clothes, antiques and more. Barnsley Market Services are also responsible for markets in the surrounding areas of Wombwell, Penistone, Hoyland and Goldthorpe.

In Barnsley, the Market Hall is open 8:30am to 5pm, every day except Thursdays and Sundays; the Open and Semi-Open Markets are closed Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays, and open between 8am and 4:30pm; the Meat and Fish Markets are closed Thursdays and Sundays, and open between 8:30am and 5pm.

For those with an interest in antiques, the Antique and Collectors Market is held on Tuesdays between 8am and 4:30pm, and there is a Car Boot sale on Sundays between 7am and 1pm.
