Pubs and Bars
There are said to be more than 120 pubs and bars in and around Barnsley, more (per square mile) than most UK cities, so there is certain to be something to suit most tastes. As well as the usual chain pubs and franchised theme bars, there are plenty of ex-workingmen’s clubs and real ale pubs in the town centre, with a variety of atmospheres – and jukeboxes.
The Citrus Rooms, comprising a bar, music venue and café, has a reputation as one of the most fashionable venues in the town. It is located on Eastgate and has recently undergone a radical refurbishment. Music events are held Monday and Thursday in the venue’s three rooms. The café serves a range of homemade snacks and meals prepared by an in-house chef. The venue is available for private hire, with or without catering.
The Farm Road Social Club is a workingmen’s club, on Farm Road, with hundreds of members from the surrounding areas. Despite having changed hands a number of times, the social club has gradually built a loyal customer base and continues to grow in popularity. Amongst the regular entertainment is the Saturday Rock Night, where bands are invited to play live on the club’s stage. For sports fans, there is a pool league and pay-per-view football matches shown in the bar.
The Arches is a bar and live music venue, based on Pitt Street, and described by Sandman as the best venue in Barnsley. The Arches showcases local and national bands, puts on student nights with cheap drinks, and even presents an under-18s night for underage music-lovers.
For fans of house music, there is Tempo. With a 4am license for Saturdays, different guest DJs every week and Jetza as a resident, the bar is rapidly becoming first choice for many young people in Barnsley. Opened in 2004, the bar is on Shambles Street in the town centre, above the recently opened Oxygen nightclub.
There are around a dozen real ale pubs in Barnsley, including Chambers in Peel Square that has recently been refurbished and covers two floors, George and Dragon on Summer Lane with pool, darts and barbeques on the terrace over the weekend, and just around the corner, the Moulders Arms with a covered patio garden.
