Barnsley
Art Galleries
Barnsley is home to only one permanent art gallery, The Cooper Gallery. This is complemented by an annual exhibition at the college. This situation is a key concern of the local Council and high on its cultural regeneration agenda.
The Cooper Gallery on Church Street, opposite the town hall, serves as a permanent home to the Cooper Gallery Trustees collection of paintings, drawings and watercolours dating from between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. There are also temporary exhibitions in the gallery of the works of local and national artists, including the Craft Showcase, comprising the work of local and national craft designers and artists. These exhibitions change frequently, and the annual South Yorkshire Open Art exhibition is held here each April, making the gallery worth more than one visit.
An on-site café, Down to Earth, serves snacks and drinks throughout the day, and there is also a gift shop. Admission to the gallery is free, and it is open every day except Sundays.
The Cooper Gallery is Barnsley’s only dedicated art gallery but temporary exhibitions are occasionally to be found in other venues around the town. The Cannon Hall museum, for example, displays historical paintings and crafts that may be of interest to an art-lover. There is also J+K Wood, a framing shop and art gallery with a small and frequently changing collection of art on display.
The Barnsley College of Creative Arts hosts an annual Celebration of Excellence, showcasing the art and design work and musical achievement of its students. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and takes place in various locations around the Barnsley College campus.
The Arts Development Service was set up in Barnsley to encourage and promote local artists and their work. It achieves its aims by awarding grants to individuals and communities for their art-related projects and events. The service is free to use and available to all. Those wishing to apply should contact the Arts Development Manager on 01226 774 468.
